Just Another New
Year's Eve
by Ing
Don't look so sad.
It's not so bad, you know.
It's just another night.
That's all it is.
"Justin...your missing the party."
"What?"
"Where were you?" Cameron asked him as she walked up behind him and
wrapped her arms around him.
"I'm here, why would you think I was someplace else?" He said as he
turned around so that he was now looking at her.
"Because every since we have gotten here you have been really withdrawn. I
catch you just staring off into space or you just have this blank look on your
face," She said and paused, "I would have to have lived in a hole to
not know what was going on."
"What are you talking about?" He said as he placed a piece of hair
behind her ear.
"Your thinking about her, the same way you did in Hawaii..."
"Cam..." He said as he reached down and kissed her lightly on the
lips.
"No," She said as she pushed him back, "I'm not blind Justin. I
see the look on your face when you see some tourist attraction or you walk past
something. I know you were here with her....which kind of makes me wonder why
you wanted to come back?"
"Because it doesn't bother me."
"Keep saying that and maybe one day you will believe it." She said as
she turned around and went back to the party.
It's not the first... It's not the worst you know.
We've come through all the rest.
We'll get through this.
We've made mistakes...
"Brit this is a great party."
"Thanks," she said as she turned around, "and thank you for
coming."
"Thank you for inviting me."
"No, it's an honor to have you here."
"And I wouldn't be anywhere else tonight."
"Thank you for being here tonight, and for everything you have done for me
this year."
"It was my pleasure. You remind me of myself, just do me one favor."
"Of course."
"Be happy, do what makes you happy, not what makes everyone else
happy."
"I will, I always do."
"Britney, I haven't known you along time, but I do know you try to make
everyone else happy and forget about yourself."
"I'll try." She said as she swiped the lone tear that fell from her
eye
"Don't try, do it. This is a brand new year, a time for new
beginnings."
"Thank you." Britney said biting her lip.
But we've made good friends, too.
Remember all the nights...
We've spent with them.
Who says they can't come true?
Tonight's another chance to start again.
"Here." Trace said as he handed Justin the bottle of beer
"Did Cameron send you over here?"
He looked over his shoulder and nodded
"I should have known."
"You know this is hard on her, she's really trying."
Justin looked at his friend. "You know I didn't want to come
here," He said as he took a sip of his drink, "I wanted to just stay
home, but she insisted. Said that it would be fun."
"Maybe she thought it would, before you went into your self induced Britney
coma." Trace said. "You know you really aren't giving this a
shot."
"What do you want me to do? What do you expect me to do?"
"Let go."
"Fuck you, you let go." He said as he stormed out of the room
It's just another New Year's Eve.
Another night like all the rest.
It's just another New Year's Eve...
Let's make it the best.
"Hey Boo," Felicia said as she walked up and joined Britney at her
table, "You having fun?"
Britney smiled up at the older woman "Yeah, it's a nice turnout." She
said looking around
"You've had quite a year."
"I've had quite a few years."
"That's true. But I mean with your release this year."
Britney reached over and took the older woman's hand "I'm sorry, I know
what you meant. I didn't mean to snap. It really was an eventful year."
"Try to tone it down this year ok. Your daddy's heart isn't as strong as it
used to be." She teased. "I don't know how many more girl on
girl kisses or nude magazine covers he can take."
Britney looked down at her hands that were holding the glass "Were they
that bad?"
"I was just teasing....a little." She said trying to make Britney
laugh, "But think about the year, you were with Fred, Colin, and you tried
again with Justin."
A tear fell from her eye "I'm sorry boo. I didn't mean to......."
"No Felicia, it's fine. It has been a big year," She said holding her
glass up. "Here's to an even bigger one in 2004," She said as
they clinked glasses.
It's just another New Year's Eve.
It's just another auld lang syne.
But when we're through. This New Year you'll see we'll be just fine
"Justin it's cold you need to come inside." His mother said
"Why so I can hear more sermons, no thank you."
"Honey what's the matter?"
"I'm tired that's all. And I don't need both Cam and Trace on my
back."
"Can I ask you a question?"
"Sure. Not positive I'll answer you but shoot."
"Why did you agree to come here. I mean I know what this place means to
you, how special it is.'"
"You have no idea," He said, "But it's her test, I know it
is."
"That's not an answer."
"How about because I didn't want to hear her bitch about it."
We're not alone.
We've got the world, you know.
And it won't let us down.
Just wait and see
"Hey."
"Hey yourself."
"Why are you so quiet."
"I'm not, just because I'm not dancing on tables doesn't mean something is
wrong. "
"No one said anything was wrong. Are you sure your ok?"
"I'm fine."
"Brit, you can lie to a lot of people here tonight. You can put on a brave
face and smile and enjoy yourself. But I'm one of the only people who know what
the significance of this night is."
"This night means nothing, it's just the end of another year." Britney
said but before she knew what was happening she placed her head in her hands and
began to cry. "Oh God Jenny..." she sobbed, "what happened?"
"I don't know." Jenny said as she pulled her friend into her arms,
"I wish I did."
"I used to think that I had it all, that my life was perfect. I never knew
that things would fall apart so fast."
"I didn't either."
"You know I had finally started to realize that what happened, well it
happened for a reason." Britney said as she swiped at the tears that fell
from her eyes.
"Really?"
"Yeah, we were young and careless and we didn't think anything could touch
us. We were immortal, but we were wrong. We could be touched and we could hurt
and we could break and we did."
"But Brit, you can also heal." She said as she reached in her purse
and pulled out a cell phone. "Don't let the new year catch you and you
still have this unfinished. You can't let another year go and not get it
out."
But think how wise we'll grow.
There's more you know.
It's only New Year's Eve
Justin sat in the back of the room and his phone started ringing. "Justin
just let it ring." Cameron said angrily
"I better get it, it could be an emergency. No one has this number."
He said as he walked outside and answered the phone. "Hello."
"Justin."
"Brit, is that you?"
"Yeah its me.." she said and paused, "I just wanted...I wanted to
wish you a happy new year."
"Thanks, same to you." He said
"I better let you go.."
"Brit, wait I have to ask you something?"
"What is it?"
"What happened to us?"
"We broke." Was as she said before the tears started to fall "
And we didn't bother to try to put the pieces back together."
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you."
"Justin I'm sorry too. I just always wanted to make you happy, I never
wanted to hurt you."
"I never wanted to hurt you either."
"But lately that's all we seen to do is hurt each other."
It's just another New Year's Eve.
Another night like all the rest.
It's just another New Year's Eve.
Let's make it the best.
"You look great tonight." Bryan said as he walked up on Britney
"Thanks Bry." She said as she reached up and kissed him. Hoping that
he didn't see that she had been crying.
"I can't wait until this year is over." He said as he handed her a
glass
"No thanks I've had enough," she said pushing it away. "I
want to remember seeing this year out."
"Your right." He said putting his bottle down
"This year is going to be different. It's going to be better." She
said trying to smile.
"Umm... Brit, I hate to be the one to tell you but it can't get any
worse."
He saw the blank look on her face and knew in her mind and in her heart that it
could get worse. And it more than likely would be worse.
"Don't leave me Bry." Britney said as she rested her head on him.
"Never baby sister, it's you and me against the world. 2004's not going to
be able to handle us, it's going to be our year."
She closed her eyes and hoped that he was right.
It's just another New Year's Eve.
It's just another auld lang syne.
But when we're through.. This New Year...
You'll see we'll be just fine.
